The holiday spirit
Updated: Jan 14, 2022
I am pleased to announce that my memoir is published in the Nov/Dec issue of the Writer and Readers’ magazine! This special holiday issue is about Christmas and New Year’s celebrations around the world. I was born and raised in exotic Hawaii, and have some unique holiday memories to share. Growing up in a famous neighborhood on the island of Oahu, affectionately called “Christmas Lane”, saw our little neck of the woods inundated in December with tour buses full of tourists and island residents alike. Our neighborhood would put up elaborate light displays, serve cookies and hot cocoa and play holiday music as visitors strolled along in the balmy Hawaiian night air.
I go on to share my family’s favorite holiday cookie recipes and our annual Christmas Day menu items. In Hawaii, many celebrate New Year’s with some Japanese customs like cleaning the house and eating a delicious rice cake confection called “mochi.” Fireworks and sparklers complete the celebration and then everyone waits anxiously for December so we can do it all over again. This is a warm and fuzzy memoir that will surely get you in the holiday spirit!
